IIT Kharagpur creates record, more than 1,000 students get jobs

Kharagpur has set a record among all IITs with more than a thousand of its students securing cushy jobs in the first phase of campus placements, officials said today.
Around 1,010 students of the Kharagpur campus accepted job offers in the first round of placements which ended in December.
At IIT Mumbai, there were 900 offers while IIT Delhi got about 750 offers and IIT Kanpur had around 700 offers.
IIT officials said, Kharagpur has achieved a new record with the maximum number of students getting jobs in the IIT system in one phase.
In addition to big names like Google, Microsoft, Oracle, Shell, Deutsche Bank, ITC, Schlumberger, Goldman Sachs, Credit Suisse, Abbott and EXL, start-ups like Flipkart and Housing.com were the ones who made multiple offers in dual figures.
The highest package offered was from a US-based company which has signed an IITian for an annual salary of $1.25 lakh (around Rs 77 lakh).
The highest domestic package was of Rs 37 lakh.
Two new dual degree programs - Financial Engineering and Engineering Entrepreneurship - proved to be a big hit with 85 per cent students from those courses being placed.
"The programs not only demonstrated acceptability by the industries, but projected the vision of IIT-Kgp for launching novel initiatives," said Prof Sudhir Kumar Barai, in-charge of training and placement, of the institute.
The number of companies offering placements have also increased this year with 195 organisations coming this time.
Barai said another 79 engineering students have accepted pre-placement offers from other companies.

CBSE announces date sheet for 2014 Board exams (10th & 12th Class)

After the New Year bash it is time for class X and XII students to gear up for Board examinations as Central Board for Secondary Education, CBSE, has announced the date sheet. Board exams for both classes would begin from Saturday, March 1. Where class X exams would begin with easy exams like Marathi, Spanish, Painting etc, Class XII exams would begin with English examination. As per CBSE's Regional Director, RJ Khanderao, this year 10% more students will be sitting for Board examinations in both class X and XII.

The class X exams would end on March 19 where as class XII exams would go on till April 17. All the exams would begin at 10.30am.

The announcement of the date sheet has come as a relief for all the students sitting for board exams, especially for class X as their exams would be ending within 19 days.

"I am glad all the main papers will get over by March 15 as then we will be able to happily enjoy Holi, which falls on March 17," said Ankush Chopra, a class X student.

On the other hand some of the class XII science students are a little worried about short breaks between the main exams. Though their main worry comes from the fact that many of these students will be facing Board exams for the very first time as in Class X they opted for school based board exams.

"I have opted for both medical and non medical and I feel scared because there are only three days to prepare for Biology after Chemistry Exam and after four days of biology will be Mathematics and," said Nitika Bansal, a class XII Science stream student.

"I have enough time to prepare for mathematics after Chemistry exam but I still feel anxious as this for the first time I will be giving board exams," said Dhruv Kapoor, a class XII science student.

The main exams for class XII have been scheduled for March 5 (Physics), March 11 (Chemistry), March 15 (Biology), March 20 (Mathematics) and April 1 (accountancy). It is mainly the students from Humanities stream whose exams would be ending by April 17.

Formula on CBSE papers

2014 brings good news for those who are bad at learning by rote. Central Board of Secondary Education is planning to load papers with all the formulas required to answer the questions.
The board is planning question paper reforms in order to make these more application-based in a bid to discourage rote learning.
It has already introduced Open Text-Based Assessment from 2013-14 for classes IX and XI as part of its question paper reforms. It will now extend it to classes X and XII from 2014-15.
CBSE has set up subject committees, each comprising 2-3 experts, to work on modalities of the question papers for classes XI and XII. The question papers will mostly be application-based and not ask students to show derivation of formulas. "Instead the formulas, themselves, will be given on the question papers and all the student must do is identify the right one to solve the problem," said a senior CBSE official. For science and commerce subjects, too, formulas will be given on the question papers for students to attempt the numericals.
The committees are expected to submit suggestions by February 2014 and the Board will implement the changes from the new academic session of 2014-15 for Class XI and 2015-16 for Class XII.
CBSE has implemented Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation system for secondary level classes, thereby making the teaching learning process more application-based. "CCE is currently limited to Class X. The board is planning these reforms to discourage students from rote learning so that they devote more time to applications-based study at senior secondary level," CBSE chairman Vineet Joshi said.

All set for January 10-22 Chennai book fair

Chennai: Next to Margazhi music, Chennaiites will be enchanted with the book festival.
Several publishing houses are excited to participate in the Tamil Nadu’s biggest and popular book fair in the city with their new collections that will start on January 10 and will end on January 22.
Bookseller’s association staff say that more than 700 stalls will be put up in the fair. And YMCA has been finalised as the venue.
Aiming for bumper profits in the book fair,  publishers are gearing up with new titles on children, science, environment, literature and law.
Many publications have come up with several books for children and teens than for other age group readers.
K. Nagarajan, publisher of the Bharathi Puthagalayam,  said that he would hit the show with detective stories penned by renowned filmmaker Satyajit Ray for children and other comic books.
“We have 15 new titles on comic stories, history, sociology and science for children this year. Children literature in Tamil is a niche area but it is fast growing.” P.N.Sivam of Alaigal publications said he was ready with two interesting topics on women revolutionaries and Ambedkar for the fair.
Mazhalai Sol Pathipagam talks of 3D books for children. “We have got three big collections for children this year.
One book has 20 stories for children with 3D pictures.
Another book on Panchantra stories which are popular among children even at e-age,” said K.Malarvizhi, publisher of Mazhalai Sol Pathipagam She said that colourful storybooks still excite children in the age of touch screen phones and tablets.
Poovulagin Nanbargal, a voluntary organisation working on environment, has come up with eight new books on birds, environmentalists and 20 other small books on recent green issues like methane extraction project and  Kudankulam power project to introduce green issues to school and college students.

Medical Council of India may cancel extra seats

The state government’s negligence in upgrading facilities in government medical colleges and teaching hospitals may cost Andhra Pradesh 400 MBBS seats this year.
The Medical Council of India had granted additional seats after the then chief secrtary Minnie Mathew gave a written undertaking in April that all deficiencies will be rectified by December.
The MCI may withdraw the additional seats if there is no improvement of facilities by April. Currently, there are 15 government medical colleges that offer 2,400 MBBS seats.
The intake was increased by 400 last year. Seats were increased in colleges in Kakinada, Guntur, Warangal, Vijayawada, Kurnool, Tirupati, Hyderabad and Nizamabad.
Inspection teams had found problems with the classrooms, laboratories, seminar halls and hostels and discovered a faculty crunch in clinical and non-clinical departments.
However, the MCI granted ‘conditional approval’ following the state government’s assurance that all issues would be addressed within six months.
They, however, remain unresolved even now.
The Centre had last year released a Rs 80 crore grant to the state government to improve facilities in government colleges and hospitals.
However, an inordinate delay in releasing the state government’s matching grant held up the works.
Medical education minister Kondru Murali, however, said, “Work is on to improve facilities. Notifications are being issued to fill vacant posts by March. We will get additional seats this year too.”
