Careers in Journalism

Pen is mightier than the sword. Even today, the younger generation is attracted to journalism. Everyday, there are several events happening across the world - political, cultural, religious, educational, social and natural events, etc. We come to know about these events sitting in our houses. How is that possible? Through mass communication, providing information to a large crowd at the same time. But, for this, someone has to collect the information as well as present it. This is the main aim of journalism. Journalism includes investigating, analysing and reporting local as well as world events, trends, current affairs, and so on.
Qualification
Journalism courses are offered at graduation and postgraduation levels. To become a journalism , one can complete a Bachelor's in mass communication/ mass media/journalism after +2. After completion in a related graduation field, one may complete a Master's in journalism or mass communication. A graduate (who has a flair for writing) from any other field can also opt for a postgraduate course in journalism.
Also required is command over language, confidence, enthusiasm, patience and perseverance, ability to differentiate between fact and fiction, adhering to deadlines, team cohesiveness, sensitivity to different views and lifestyles, in-depth knowledge about various fields such as politics, culture, religion, social and current affairs. The most important fact is that people generally feel that journalism is all about writing. It is. However, it is also about reading and most importantly, the ability to express one's thoughts on varied topics. Journalism is for people who are ready to explore various opportunities 24/7, without the constraints of cultural upbringing, gender, and are also ready to go beyond geographical boundaries.
Job prospects
There are different categories in which the media industry can be divided - print and electronic. As the name suggests, everything that is printed comes under print media, which includes newspapers, magazines, journals, tabloids, dailies and books. On the other hand, electronic media includes content on television, radio and the internet. With changes in the society, even this field has undergone a radical change. A journalist has to cover stories/ features on various aspects of life i.e. political, financial, leisure, crime, sports, entertainment, spiritual, educational, infrastructure, technological, medical, and so on. Not to forget, along with the newspapers, there has been an increase in the number of magazines too. Specialised magazines are available in the field of fashion, beauty, family, for youth, travel, medical, technological, lifestyle, education, sports, etc. They can be in many languages.
Some of the work opportunities are in the areas of advertising agencies; educational institutes, magazines, news papers, portals/websites of publications, publishing houses, radio channels as well as television channels. While there are opportunities in this field, it is a competitive field. Therefore, one has to perform at the highest level and be able to work under difficult situations. However, if one persists with hard work and passion, a career in journalism can be a fulfilling and lucrative option.
Skills required• Inquisitive and investigative mind
• Alertness
• Adaptive and tolerant of changing and difficult situations

GATE 2014 New paper pattern

Preparations for any entrance exam or test begins with understanding the paper pattern or the structure of the exam, as it gives a direction to student’s efforts. Some important facts about the structure of GATE 2014 are as given below:

Common factor:

One thing common for all the papers is:

- Total 65 questions for 100 marks

- Out of which 10 questions - 15 marks - General Aptitude (GA) and the remaining of the total marks are devoted to the subject of the paper.

Two different types of questions:

In the various papers of GATE 2014, there would be questions of two different types:

(i) Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) – Objective questions carrying 1 or 2 marks, where each question will have a choice of four answers, out of which the candidate has to mark the correct answer(s), in all papers and sections.

(ii) Numerical answer questions – Each question of 1 or 2 marks in all papers and sections. For these questions the answer is a real number, to be entered by the candidate using the virtual keypad. No choices will be shown for this type of questions.

 Design of questions:
The questions in a paper may be designed to test the following abilities:

(i) Recall: These are based on facts, principles, formulae or laws of the discipline of the paper. The candidate is expected to be able to obtain the answer either from his/her memory of the subject or at most from a one-line computation.

(ii) Comprehension: These questions will test the candidate's understanding of the basics of his/her field, by requiring him/her to draw simple conclusions from fundamental ideas.

(iii) Application: In these questions, the candidate is expected to apply his/her knowledge either through computation or by logical reasoning.

(iv) Analysis and synthesis: In these questions, the candidate is presented with data, diagrams, images etc. that require analysis before a question can be answered. A synthesis question might require the candidate to compare two or more pieces of information.

 Marking Scheme:

- For 1 - mark multiple-choice questions, 1/3 marks will be deducted for a wrong answer.
- For 2 - marks multiple-choice questions, 2/3 marks will be deducted for a wrong answer.
- The GA section includes 5 questions carrying 1 mark each (sub-total 5 marks) and 5 questions carrying 2 marks each (sub-total 10 marks).

NEET 2014 will be replaced by AIPMT

All India Medical Entrance Test that CBSE plans to conduct on 4 May, 2014 would be known as AIPMT even though the exam pattern, structure and syllabus for the exam will be the same as that of NEET UG 2013 (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test.)

NEET UG, that replaced AIPMT last year, was supposed to be a single entrance examination to get admission to almost all medical colleges in India, including private medical colleges. The main aim behind the introduction of NEET was to relieve the need of students to appear in multiple tests and promote merit in admission process.

However, many states as well as colleges did not support the idea of replacing the AIPMT with NEET.

Hence this year, the CBSE released an official notification stating that it would now conduct AIPMT 2014. AIPMT will be conducted only for the 15% national quota in government medical/dental colleges all over India except for the states of Andhra Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir.

NEET was supposed to have replaced many state level and institute level medical entrance exams. But AIPMT won't be replacing any such exams.

Compulsory 1 year rural posting for MBBS doctors from 2015-16

MBBS students applying for admission to post-graduate medical courses from academic year 2015-16 will have to undertake a mandatory rural posting at a public health centre (PHC) for one year.

This was stated by minister of health and family welfare Ghulam Nabi Azad in a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday.

He said this comes into effect after the proposal of Medical Council of India (MCI) to amend the Post Graduate Medical Education Regulations, 2000, in this regard has since been approved by the ministry of health and family welfare.

The minister said there is a shortfall of the number of doctors in the country, with 2,489 doctors falling short in primary health centres.

Azad said there is also a shortfall of 3,459 surgeons, 3,005 obstericians and gynaecologists, 3,667 physicians, 3,270 paediatricians and a total of 13,477 specialists in community health centres across the country as on March 31, 2012.

Infosys may hire up to 16,000 campus recruits next year

Infosys, India's second-largest information technology services provider that is attempting to return to stronger growth by winning large outsourcing contracts, expects to hire as many as 16,000 college graduates next fiscal year.
Infosys is in the process of making these offers, executive chairman Narayana Murthy told students at the Vivekanand Education Society in Mumbai, where he was delivering a lecture on Wednesday.
Murthy did not give details about the company's overall recruitment target for the next fiscal, which would include experienced hires and staff for the company's back-office unit.
In October, Infosys tightened its guidance for the year ending March 2014 raising hopes that the company is on the mend. Founder Murthy returned in June after Infosys, once the sector bellwether, lost ground to competitors over some two years marked by a series of disappointing results and a deferment of hiring campus recruits to whom it had made job offers.
Helped by a broad pickup in demand for IT outsourcing in its biggest markets the United States and Europe, India's $108 billion (Rs 6.6 lakh crore) software services sector is expected to accelerate its growth in the year ahead.
Nasscom, the industry lobby, may say the sector will boost exports by 15 per cent for the next fiscal year, brokerage Prabhudas Lilladhar said in a recent report. That compares with 12-14 per cent for the year that ends March.
