Wipro offers $2.8 million grant for a STEM Fellowship Program

BANGALORE: Wipro and Michigan State University (MSU) have launched the Wipro STEM Fellowship Program that would focus on building leadership in these disciplines in urban schools. 

This multi-year programme will be funded by a $2.8 million grant from Wipro, and will involve over a hundred school teachers, with the aim of nurturing excellence in science and mathematics, starting with the public school systems of Chicago. 

The Wipro STEM Fellowship Program will focus on building leadership in these disciplines in urban schools by leveraging on research validated expertise of the College of Education at the MSU in designing transformative and innovative instructional experiences. For the Chicago public schools system, this program and its fellow teachers will be an integrated part of its effort towards STEM capacity development in the districts. 

Wipro's initiative is aligned with the US national goal to significantly improve the quality of education in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). "Wipro is committed to being an involved participant in its communities. This initiative seeks to develop and inspire young people to contribute to excellence in STEM education," said T.K Kurien, CEO of Wipro. 

The program, to be entirely funded by Wipro, will identify teachers committed to teaching in urban schools after a rigorous selection process. Participants will be elementary or secondary school educators. 

Successful participants will earn a Graduate Certificate in STEM Teaching and Leadership recognizing their commitment and expertise in STEM fields in urban education. All program participants will also become part of the STEM Urban Learning & Leadership Community. This community seeks to create a cohort culture that builds both individual and collective capacity to give an impetus for STEM learning outcomes among urban students. The program leverages directly on the significant Urban Education initiatives of the College of Education, MSU, and its award winning Master of Arts Program in Education Technology. 

The College of Education, MSU is one of the leading schools of education in the US, working across multiple states. 

"There is a critical shortage of excellent math and science teachers nationwide and even more so in urban school districts," said project co-leader Sonya Gunnings-Moton, assistant dean in the College of Education, Michigan State University. "We need leaders among teachers who can build not only their own capacity to improve learning, but also the capacity of their colleagues."

"This program is designed to develop each of these teachers into catalysts of change in disadvantaged communities of urban areas. This initiative also dovetails with our vision of making a deep and impactful contribution towards achieving high quality education," said Anurag Behar, chief sustainability officer, Wipro. 

This initiative with MSU is the second such program that Wipro has kicked off in the past 16 months in the US. In 2012, Wipro and the University of Massachusetts, Boston (UMass Boston) jointly launched a fellowship program across 10 districts of Boston and Newark area in STEM Education, with the aim of fostering excellence. 

Since the beginning of the last decade, Wipro has unveiled a raft of initiatives targeted at resolving issues dogging India's education system. Wipro's Applying Thought in Schools aims to improve the quality of school education. Mission10x is an initiative, wherein the company works with college teachers to enhance employability skills of engineering graduates in India.

Wipro launches online programme for students

BANGALORE: Indian IT bellwether Wiprounveiled an online programme to trainundergraduate students in finance and accounts to enhance their job skills in both subjects, the company said Wednesday. 

"We have started imparting skills online to final year students of commerce and business administration in select degree colleges across Bangalore, Chennai and Hyderabad to enhance their employability in finance and accounting," Wipro back office global head Subhasish Biswas said in a statement here. 

The online course has been designed in two parts - basics of finance and accounting and corporate readiness training. 

Successful students will be certified after assessing their skills for a placement in the global software major. 

The 24-hour programme consists of modules, which give students flexibility to work over two months along with their graduation course. 

The course modules are in a video-based PowerPoint presentation format to understand the concepts. 

"As we need readily employable workforce, our expertise in training delivery in the services sector enabled us to create a platform for graduating students to pursue a rewarding career in finance and accounts," Biswas said. 

Wipro's business process outsourcing (BPO) division has partnered with Firstnaukri.com to promote the initiative and allow the job portal to host the online module and distribute it to colleges with which it has tie-up across the country. 

"Indian businesses are struggling to recruit youth with right technical and soft skill sets. It is becoming imperative for companies to focus on skill development and employability of youth entering workforce," Firstnaukri.com business head Deepali Singh said in the statement.

Wipro to train over 100 foreign interns in India

BANGALORE: As the spotlight remains fixed on the issue of onsite hiring for IT firms, Wipro is planning ahead in cultivating teams of local business leaders with an Indian ethos. The company is scaling up its "India gateway" programme, through which it gives campus recruits from the UK, Europe, and Africa an opportunity to spend months at a time in its India campuses.

Launched last year, Wipro says the programme has been more successful than anticipated, and this year, over 100 employees across the world are expected to be working here.

"Going forward, the number of local hires abroad will only increase. Management also has to come from local talent more in the future. Keeping that in mind, we felt it was important to have locals immerse themselves in the culture of the company. Having them train here is a great way to do that," says Sourabh Govil, senior vice president - Human Resources, Wipro.

"We expect these trainees to make up the middle management rung in the near future, and then go on to take bigger leadership roles," he adds.

While a majority of the students have come for 3-6 month internships in technology and management from countries such as the UK, Germany, France, Switzerland, a large number has also been roped in from South Africa, with almost 30 local students undergoing the program for three months.

Wipro says it is unsure of how many such interns it will take on board next year, but numbers are expected to surpass the 100 from this year.

Says Pratik Kumar, executive vice president, Human Resources, Wipro, "The anxiety that we had, in terms of visa issues, and interest level amongst students to come and work here, has been put to rest. The issues are much smaller than we had anticipated, students are showing a lot of interest, and we will definitely be recruiting for the program in larger numbers."
