11 new management development programmes launched in IIM Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad: Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIM-A) has launched 11 new Management Development Programmes (MDPs) for the academic session beginning 2014 - 2015.

 

Currently, IIM Ahmedabad offers the following courses: Fellow Programme in Management (FPM), Post-Graduate Programme in Management (PGP), Post Graduate Programme in Agribusiness Management (PGP-ABM), One Year Post-Graduate Programme in Management for Executives (PGPX), Faculty Development Programme (FDP) and Armed Forces Programme (AFP).

 

"A total of 77 open enrolment Management Development Programmes (MDPs) are being offered for 2014-15. Eleven new MDPs have been announced for the year 2014-15," the institute said in a statement here.

 

One of the new programmes on offer is 'Business Dispute Resolution: International and Domestic Arbitration', likely to be coordinated by Anurag K Agarwal.

 

'Doing Business Abroad' and 'Family Business: Organisation, Strategies, Internationalization and Succession' will be coordinated by Ajeet Mathur.

 

'Employee Engagement : A 3D Approach', 'Strategic Transformational Training Methodology' and 'Industrial Relations: Changes, Challenges and Responses' would be coordinated by Jerome Joseph.

 

'Business Turnaround and Organisational Transformation' and 'Managing People for Excellence in Healthcare' will be coordinated by Sunil Maheswari.

 

'Designing Systems for Developing Internal Talent' and 'Leadership Pipeline' would be coordinated by Biju Varkkey.

 

'Psychological Assessment and Psycho- Metrics' will be coordinated by Promila Agarwal and 'Enhancing Service Quality in Healthcare' by Rajeshkumar Chandwani.

 

Talking to PTI, IIM-A director Ashish Nanda said, "To realise our vision, the institute is following a three-pronged approach of Connect, Nurture and Grow."

 

Ten new faculty members joined IIM-A since September 2013, the institute said.

IIM aspirants cry foul over CAT, move court

CHENNAI: Alleging large-scale irregularities in the manner in which the Common Admission Test (CAT) for admission to 13 Indian Institutes of Management (IIM) was conducted, a petition by eight candidates in Madras high court has sought a stay on the entire admission process this year.

Justice R Subbiah, before whom the petition filed by the eight IIM aspirants from Chennai came up for admission on Thursday, directed the Union human resources development ministry and IIM-Indore, which conducted the CAT 2013, to reserve one seat each to all petitioners who moved the court.

CAT is the first step for joining any of the 13 IIMs, and some other top management institutions too use the scores for their admissions. After a 20-day exercise beginning October 16 last year at 40 centres, the CAT results were published on January 14.

The petitioners assailed the examination format and said: "The computerised format of CAT 2013 was conducted over a period of 20 days and the obvious consequence of it is varying standards of difficulty. The level of difficulty was different for each slot of the testing period. The method of 'equating', 'scaling' and 'normalisation' used by the authorities to normalise the scores is unlawful and erroneous."

The process of equating and scaling, which is otherwise known as normalisation of scores, has caused grave irregularities in the scores obtained by students, the petition said.

"It has been proved that candidates who have not attempted even a single question have been awarded a percentile of 55.46 and this, in turn, implies that more than 50% of the 1.7 lakh candidates who appeared for CAT scored zero or even less."

The entire registration process, setting up test centres, compilation of questions, evaluating answers and calculation and publication of results have all been outsourced to a Gurgaon-based company, Prometric Testing Pvt Ltd.

Describing the January 14 results as shocking and illogical, the petitioners said the normalised scores of several thousand candidates were not in consonance with the number of questions attempted by them.

Citing the case of a faculty member of a coaching centre who writes CAT every year, the petition said he did not attempt any question, but had scored 165 out of 450 marks and had an overall percentile of 55.46. Alleging lack of transparency in the evaluation, they wanted the court to stay the process of admission to IIMs as well as other institutions based on CAT. They also wanted the court to quash the entire CAT 2013 held between October 16, 2013 and November 1, 2013.

Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode PGP Admission Procedure for 2014-16

IIM Kozhikode has announced the admission criteria for the academic year 2014-16 of the Post Graduate Programme. The admission will take place through CAT 2013 scores, Group Discussion (GD) or Written Ability Test (WAT) and Personal Interview (PI) and the candidate profile.

The first step of admission is to shortlist the candidates based on the CAT 2013 scores and past academic record. The following table will give you the CAT 2013 cut off.

IIM Kozhikode mentions that from all the eligible students who register with IIM Kozhikode, a short-list of students will be prepared based on Aggregate Index Score. This score is based on performance in CAT 2013, Bachelors degree and other traits relevant for management education. The Aggregate Index Score calculation details are given below.

a.Graduation Index Score:

i. For those who completed their Bachelor’s degree the percentage marks reported in their marks/grade sheet will be considered.

ii. Percentage marks for incomplete Bachelor’s degree applicants are based on their available marks.

iii. For those students having cleared CA/ICWAI/CS without having Bachelor’s degree, their average of intermediate and final level marks will be treated as Bachelor’s degree marks.

iv. For bachelor’s degree, the percentage of marks awarded by Institute/University will be treated as final. If the Institute/University does not award the percentage of marks, it will be calculated on the basis of the marks obtained in all subjects listed in the mark sheet.

v. If the percentage of marks awarded by Institute/University does not take into account marks obtained in all the subjects as mentioned in the marksheet(s) for all the years, the students must produce a certificate from the Principal/Head of the Department/Registrar/Director of the university/institution certifying details of the practice at the time of the GD/WAT-PI, if short-listed for the same.

vi. If any Board/Institute/University awards only letter grades without providing an equivalent percentage of marks on the grade sheet, the candidate should obtain a certificate from the Board/Institute/University specifying the equivalent marks. The original equivalence certificate needs to be submitted at the time of GD/WAT-PI, if short-listed for the same. Obtaining the equivalence certificate is the responsibility of students.

vii. For students having a 5-year integrated Master's degree, percentage of marks obtained in the first 3 years will be considered as bachelor’s degree.

b. CAT Index Score: Performance in CAT is an important input in the admission process. Students should note that it is important to perform well in each section of the test. Scaled Scores from both the sections (with equal weightages) of CAT 2013 will go in to computation of CAT Index Score. CAT Index Score will carry a weight of 76%.

c. To ensure diversity, marks will be awarded for diversity (gender (5%) or academic discipline (2%)) related factors. A student is entitled to diversity marks from only one factor, whichever is higher. The non-engineering disciplines are applicable for academic diversity factor.

d. Previous work/professional experience will carry a weight of 5% depending on the length of service as on January 31, 2014. Only managerial work experience after graduation will be considered. Training/Project work/work completed as an integral part of curricular requirement will not be considered.

Final Selection Process at IIM Kozhikode

The shortlisted candidates will have to appear for Group Discussion/Written Ability Test and Personal Interview rounds. The final selection will take place on the basis of the following factors:

IIM-B to host Global Ethics Forum in 2014

IIM Calcutta launches a new activity centre

IIM Calcutta is renowned for introducing new initiatives and they took it a step further with the launch of yet another activity centre, IIM Calcutta Case Research Centre (IIMCCRC).
 
Over the last few years IIMC has developed a strong team of approximately 25 faculty members who have been exposed to case teaching, writing, and research through recruitment of young faculty members from case teaching oriented institutions. IIMCCRC will offer these faculty members and others necessary platform and infrastructure to build a repository of cases on Indian companies.

The activities of the centre will include case development, workshops on case writing, teaching and research, and eventually building case repository. Such repository of cases and teaching notes can be used by faculty members of IIMC, other Indian business schools/universities and even universities from abroad.

The Centre will follow a rigorous review process in order to ensure that the cases developed with the support of IIMCCRC are of the highest standard. The IIMCCRC has set a target of developing 10 teaching cases in the very first year of its operation.

The launch of the centre was held in organising the maiden case research workshop on case writing, teaching and research in the new academic block of the campus on June 14-15, 2012. The workshop was two-day long and comprised three eminent speakers. Day 1 had two workshops, Managing Case Writing conducted by Jeroen van den Berg, center manager of the Center for Business Case Studies, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, followed by Case Selection and Case Writing by Anjali Raina, executive director, Harvard Business School India Research Center.

Day 2 had one workshop, Art of Case Writing conducted by Jim Erskine, emeritus professor of operations management, Richard Ivey, School of Business, Canada. The workshop aimed to provide a suitable platform to learn from these three learned leaders. They can spread the boundaries of their knowledge in case writing, teaching and research. It also provided an opportunity to network with speakers associated with the three leading case repositories in the world – Ivey, HBS, and ACRC (HKU).
