Medical Council of India may cancel extra seats

The state government’s negligence in upgrading facilities in government medical colleges and teaching hospitals may cost Andhra Pradesh 400 MBBS seats this year.
The Medical Council of India had granted additional seats after the then chief secrtary Minnie Mathew gave a written undertaking in April that all deficiencies will be rectified by December.
The MCI may withdraw the additional seats if there is no improvement of facilities by April. Currently, there are 15 government medical colleges that offer 2,400 MBBS seats.
The intake was increased by 400 last year. Seats were increased in colleges in Kakinada, Guntur, Warangal, Vijayawada, Kurnool, Tirupati, Hyderabad and Nizamabad.
Inspection teams had found problems with the classrooms, laboratories, seminar halls and hostels and discovered a faculty crunch in clinical and non-clinical departments.
However, the MCI granted ‘conditional approval’ following the state government’s assurance that all issues would be addressed within six months.
They, however, remain unresolved even now.
The Centre had last year released a Rs 80 crore grant to the state government to improve facilities in government colleges and hospitals.
However, an inordinate delay in releasing the state government’s matching grant held up the works.
Medical education minister Kondru Murali, however, said, “Work is on to improve facilities. Notifications are being issued to fill vacant posts by March. We will get additional seats this year too.”

AIPGMEE 2014: Results to be out by 31 Jan

The National Board of Examinations (NBE) and Prometric India have announced the successful completion of the All India Post Graduate Medical Entrance Examination (AIPGMEE) for admission to MD/MS courses in 2014.

72,197 candidates had registered for the test from 71 centers in 38 cities.

AIPGMEE 2014 was conducted from 25 November to 6 December, 2013 without any technical issues and the results are expected to be announced on schedule i.e. by 31 January, 2014, said Bipin Batra, Executive Director, National Board of Examinations.

AIPGMEE 2014 was a computer based test (CBT) conducted by the NBE in collaboration with the testing agency, Pro metric.

This year, the state governments of Haryana, Punjab, Chhattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Kerala and the University of Delhi will utilize the AIPGMEE 2014 results for admission to MD/MS/PG diploma courses at colleges which fall under their control. These states will not conduct any separate state entrance examination of their own.

Admission to MD/MS/PG diploma course for institutes under Armed Forces Medical Services will also be made on the basis of results of the AIPGMEE 2014.

The MD/MS course is three years long from the date of admission and candidates are eligible foradmission once they complete the compulsory rotating internship.

The Diploma course is two years long from the date of admission after completion of compulsory rotating internship.

NEET 2014 will be replaced by AIPMT

All India Medical Entrance Test that CBSE plans to conduct on 4 May, 2014 would be known as AIPMT even though the exam pattern, structure and syllabus for the exam will be the same as that of NEET UG 2013 (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test.)

NEET UG, that replaced AIPMT last year, was supposed to be a single entrance examination to get admission to almost all medical colleges in India, including private medical colleges. The main aim behind the introduction of NEET was to relieve the need of students to appear in multiple tests and promote merit in admission process.

However, many states as well as colleges did not support the idea of replacing the AIPMT with NEET.

Hence this year, the CBSE released an official notification stating that it would now conduct AIPMT 2014. AIPMT will be conducted only for the 15% national quota in government medical/dental colleges all over India except for the states of Andhra Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir.

NEET was supposed to have replaced many state level and institute level medical entrance exams. But AIPMT won't be replacing any such exams.
