Infosys become first Indian IT company to generate own power


BANGALORE: In 2006, soaring hotel costs and traffic snarls led Infosys to build Le Terrace, a four-star hotel with 500 rooms for its employees and overseas clients in its campus in Bangalore's Electronics City.

Eight years on, the software industry posterchild is about to embark on generating its own power, in the process saving costs, getting clean reliable power for its operations and fulfilling its broader obligations to society.

Infosys has proposed a 50 mw solar park in Karnataka, becoming the first software company in India to think of generating its own power that will meet a bulk of the electricity needs of its offices in Bangalore, Mysore and Mangalore.

Karnataka's energy minister DK Shivakumar told ET on Monday that Infosys had held one round of talks with the state government in which it had expressed keenness to build the solar power facility.

"The company will buy land on its own," he said. Infosys confirmed the intent and said it will submit a formal proposal to the government once they finalise the land.

"We hope to commission the park in about a year," said Infosys Executive Vice President Ramadas Kamath told ET. Asked why Infosys is entering captive generation, he said that his company wanted to be self-sufficient in energy.

"We want to promote use of clean energy and reduce carbon emission. Solar is the best option. Several parts of Karnataka have good solar intensity. We now have solar technologies wherein you recover your investment in eight years. It has less of maintenance hassle, and easy to build," said Kamath, who heads facilities, administration, security and sustainability at Infosys.

Kamath said the idea to build a solar park had been mooted a year ago by Infosys' head of Green Initiative Rohan Parekh, and had won the support of the company's board of directors. "Narayana Murthy and the Board have been very keen that we do this," Kamath said.

The company has already started looking for some 300 acres of land in regions of Karnataka where solar intensity is high.

The company expects project cost, including land, to be about Rs 360-380 crore, small change for a company that is sitting on a cash pile of Rs 30,000 crore. Infosys estimates that it would require about five acres of land to generate one megawatt of solar power and excluding land costs, each MW of capacity will require its shell out around Rs 6.5 crore.

All the Infosys offices in Karnataka, which between them have around 65,000 seats, consume about 95 million units a year. The pro- posed 50 MW will generate about 84 million units, nearly 90% of Infosys present energy needs.

1 MW capacity equals 1000 kilowatts or 1.67 million units of energy a year and is enough to light up anywhere between 300 and 350 homes in cities such as Delhi, Mumbai or Bangalore.

"We will buy the balance from the grid," Kamath said, adding that the company would consider scaling up its generation capacity based on its experience with the 50 MW initially planned. Grid power presently costs the company, which has managed to halve its per capita consumption of power between 2007 and 2013, about Rs 5.65 per unit, while its own solar power would cost about Rs 3 per unit after factoring in depreciation.

Barring a few states, grid power is unreliable in most parts of India, forcing companies to also have diesel-operated generators for back-up power and raising their overall power costs.

Companies such as Infosys, which carry out mission-critical operations for mostly overseas clients, need uninterrupted power and its solar experiment, if successful, could lead to other firms to think along similar lines.

How Nokia will help its former employees in India


CHENNAI: Nokia India is implementing what it calls a 'Bridge' programme for former employees who lost their jobs, providing vital help during a difficult period and earning goodwill among those who worked at its Chennai plant. 

The Finnish mobile phone maker's India manufacturing unit was at one time a marquee investment and a symbol of India's importance for Nokia. But the company quickly fell into troubled times. It has shed thousands of jobs at the Chennai factory but in a rare example of corporate social responsibility, it is trying to help its former employees cope with their reversal in fortunes. 
Among those benefitting is K Thyagarajan, 27, a former Nokia India worker who like most others suddenly lost his job and was clueless about what he would do next. He had opted for the voluntary retirement scheme and the exit had left him at a crossroads. "We were like a family, nearly 7,000 employees at the factory. I was extremely sad when they announced the VRS," said Thyagarajan. And just as he was trying to recover from the job loss, he received a letter from Nokia India requesting him to attend some interactive sessions. Thyagarajan initially ignored the letter, but then decided to give in to the persuasion. 

Thyagarajan became a part of Nokia's Bridge programme, which conducts awareness and training sessions for employees to help them secure a new job or start a new venture. It is aimed at those who have worked with the company for at least five years. Apart from structured financial assistance, the programme offers beauty treatment courses, MS Office/Tally accounting courses, training for commissioning of solar units, desktop publishing modules and garment-making. In all, there are about 30 modules being conducted in around 40 locations in TN. 

According to company statistics, over 60% of the outgoing employees have attended the awareness sessions and almost all have opted for the training sessions that have commenced in a few centres. 

Ajit Isaac, the chairman and managing director of Ikya Human Capital Solutions, said that initiatives such as these help employees gain new skills and provide them the confidence to seek opportunities outside. Industry experts are of the view that helping employees to get another job in a difficult situation is new in the Indian context whereas globally many organisations do so.

"These programmes would be based on the opportunities available in the market. This is a welcome move. Any corporate which does this, they have the long-term interests of their employees in mind," said K Purushothaman, a regional director of software industry grouping Nasscom. 

Nokia's factory was excluded from a Microsoft's recent acquisition of Nokia's devices and services units. The Chennai plant was left out of the deal because it is entangled in a legal dispute with tax authorities in New Delhi and Chennai, and the assets of this division has been frozen as a result of the dispute. 

The factory, located at Sriperumbudur, about 40 km from Chennai, is now operating as a contract manufacturer for Microsoft. Although the timeframe of this arrangement with Microsoft is unclear, Nokia India began cutting its workforce by announcing an early retirement scheme. A month after concluding the VRS programme, Nokia India came up with the Bridge programme. It has tied up with TVS Training and Services and Ace Skill Development to design and implement the programme. 

A Nokia India spokeswoman says the company has invested "tens of millions of euros" to run the Bridge program globally in which around 18,000 employees have participated. She claims the program has been successful where it "has resulted in the creation of 1,000 new companies across 19 cities/sites worldwide" and "more than 90% of those companies are still active". 

The company declined to provide specific information on investments in the programme in India. 

P Chitra, 27, who worked at Nokia India's factory for eight years, has now registered a partnership firm with other four ex-employees to export fancy jewellery. The group of five was already pursuing this as a hobby before deciding to take it up as a full-time business opportunity. The initial investment for the business came from the Bridge compensation and the VRS amounts of these five former Nokia employees. 

"We are aiming to earn a profit of Rs 1 lakh per person per month," said a confident Chitra.

Google launches online education tool Oppia


Google announced a new educational tool canned Oppia, which is an open-source project to make it easy for anyone to create online interactive activities for others to learn from. The NextWeb reported that with this tool, called explorations, activities can be built and contributed to by multiple people from around the globe using a simple web interface. Users don’t need any programming whatsoever.  
The tool does this by modeling a mentor who puts up queries for the student to answer. Based on the student’s responses, the mentor can decide what question he or she will ask next, feedbacks, and more. One can think of it as a smart feedback system.
Oppia is a free and open-source software released under the Apache License 2.0. Below are a few of its features:
  • Learners receive personalized, customizable feedback after submitting answers.
  • Explorations are embeddable in any webpage
  • An online analytics dashboard that allows explorations to be improved easily over time.
  • A full online editor GUI
  • A comprehensive extension framework allowing straightforward integration of new interactions and classification rules
  • Parameters can be associated with a learner in order to create a richer interactive experience.
  • Collaborative creation and editing of explorations with version control
  • (in progress) Responsive UI for mobile devices
A disclaimer on the bottom of the Google blog states that Oppia is not a Google product, which puts a question of the amount of resources Google plans to dedicate to Oppia. This could suggest the company is hoping that a community forms and takes the project ahead.
The NextWeb further added that Google’s reasoning Oppia’s existence was fairly simple. Google believes that online education can be conveyed by more than just video, audio or text. Feedback is the main key in learning. Google stated that “one does not learn to play the piano by watching videos of many virtuoso performances.”

ISRO successfully launches indigenous cryogenic engine - India Joins Elites club

India on Saturday successfully launched its heavy-duty rocket with indigenous cryogenic engine that placed a communication satellite into the orbit, with ISRO scientists finally taming the 'naughty boy' GSLV and propelling the country into an elite club of countries. 
The mission, which cost around Rs 360 crore, is a major milestone for the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) after 'toiling' for 20 years and ended the jinx plaguing the GSLV programme which suffered twin back-to-back failures in 2010 while its launch in August last year was aborted at the last minute.
"This is another major achievement for the GSLV programme and I would say this is an important day for science and technology, for space technology in the country (as) 20 years of efforts in realising the cryogenic engine and stage has now fructified," a visibly relieved ISRO chief K. Radhakrishnan said. 
In a textbook launch, the 49.13-metre tall GSLV D5 rocket with an indigenous cryogenic engine and stage blasted off at 4.18 PM from Satish Dhawan Space Centre and injected the 1,982-kg GSAT-14 communication satellite into the intended orbit after 17.13 minutes flight.
With this launch, India became the sixth space agency in the world after the US, Russia, Japan, China and France to have joined the indigenous cryogenic regime. The technology will help to launch heavy satellites into geostationary orbit. 
Congratulating the scientists, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said the launch marked 'another important step that the country has taken in the area of science and technology'.
Radhakrishnan said ISRO's 'toiling of 20 years, excruciating efforts of last three and half years' after its first test flight of the cryogenic engine and all the efforts by Team ISRO in the last few years in understanding Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle and making it a liable vehicle showed the scientists' maturity.
He said his scientists had put their heart and soul to ensure this proud moment and that 'we feel we have repaid all our debt to our country'.
The two failures in 2010 - one in April and the other in December - were weighing on the minds of scientists even as last year's launch was called off following a fuel leak.
GSLV D5's scheduled launch on August 19 last year was called off in the eleventh hour after a fuel leak, following which ISRO moved the vehicle back to the Vehicle Assembly Building and rectified the defect.
The events prompted one of the senior scientists, Shivan, to quip that the 'naughty boy GSLV' had matured into an 'obedient one'.

ISRO plans more GSLVs and experimental Mark III launches
Enthused over its successful launch of GSLV D5 with GSAT-14 communication satellite from Satish Dhawan Space Centre here today, ISRO is planning a series of GSLV launches and an experimental launch of the advanced version GSLV Mark III soon from the spaceport.
"We are going for a series of GSLVs after this succesful launch. GSAT 6, GSAT 7, GSAT 9, GISAT 7, Chandrayaan 2 and two more communication satellites. In the end of 2014 or in early 2015, we will have the next GSLV launch," ISRO chairman K Radhakrishnan told reporters here.
To a query on how many more successful launches would GSLV need to become reliable, he said "This launch has reached the level of maturity. However one more successful launch of GSLV would make it reliable."
With today's launch, ISRO is confident of launching satellites weighing up to 2.2 tonnes, he said, adding that the satellites from India weighing above the mark would have to be launched through other space agencies abroad. This implies that two-tonne satellites like GSAT-6, 7, 9 and 10 can be launched on board a GSLV, whereas 3.5-tonne satellites like GSAT-15,16,17 and 18 needed to be launched from abroad.
To a query on the status of Chandrayaan 2, he said the lander and rover for the mission were being developed indigenously and it would be launched on board a GSLV.
ISRO was also busy conducting a series of tests in developing the Mark III version of GSLV at Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre at Mahendragiri in Tamil Nadu, he said. "We would also have an experimental launch of GSLV Mark III soon to understand the behaviour of the vehicle in flight," the chairman said.
An ISRO team is examining the possibility of setting up a launch site at Kulasekarapattinam in south Tamil Nadu, he said, replying to a query.
Another team headed by Prof Badri Narayanamurthy is studying the third launch pad at Sriharikota, since launch vehicles like GSLV Mark III can be launched only from the second launch pad, unlike PSLVs and GSLVs, he said. "We are also working on unified launch vehicle with booster stage series cryogenic engine," Radhakrishnan said.
The year 2014-15 would also see launch of navigational satellites IRNSS-IB, IRNSS-1C, IRNSS-1D, IRNSS-1E on board PSLVs. "By March 2015, we would have five of the total seven satellites on orbit. We can start using benefits of IRNSS with four satellites on orbit, but all seven would give a better coverage," he said.
He said ISRO's Mars Orbiter mission was travelling 9.5 million km from Earth in normal health and was on schedule to reach Mars' orbit in September this year.

29-hour countdown for launch of GSLV-D5 Starts


The 29-hour countdown for the launch of ISRO's rejuvenated Geo-synchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV-D5) started at 11.18 AM on Saturday at Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh.
"The 29-hour countdown for tomorrow's launch at 4.18 PM of GSLV-D5 carrying 1,980 kg GSAT-14 communication satellite commenced as planned and is progressing smoothly," ISRO spokesperson Deviprasad Karnik told PTI.
The GSLV-D5's first mission attempt with indigenous cryogenic engine was aborted at the eleventh hour on August 19 last year due to a fuel leak in its second stage.
Fuel tank made of aluminium alloy called Afnor 7020 tended to develop crack over a period of time and the leak was blamed on it.
The GSLV is designed to inject its passenger spacecraft into the intended Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit with a combination of solid, earth-storable liquid and cryogenic propellants in it’s first, second and third stages, respectively.

How to Wirelessly Connect a PC to a TV


Most modern TVs have at least one compatible port you can use to connect your PC and display content or videos from the computer. With most computers, you can display content on a TV using a VGA, DVI or HDMI cable. However, using a cable means your computer must be relatively close to the TV to make the connection. Using wireless technology to connect your PC and TV provides you much more freedom and lets you avoid the hassle and clutter of more wires than absolutely necessary. While you could purchase a Blu-ray or TV with built-in wireless capability, these types of models are usually expensive and may not offer the features or flexibility of other wireless connection alternatives designed specifically for computers.

Hardware Requirements

The type of hardware you'll need to connect your PC or laptop to a TV wirelessly depends on the type of connection you intend to use. If your television already has a built-in Wi-Fi adapter, or if you connect the television to a high-end A/V receiver with such a device, you probably need no more than a laptop with an integrated wireless network card or a desktop PC with a USB wireless adapter. However, if you want to use other wireless protocols for connecting your computer and TV, you may need a separate adapter or receiver device that you connect to the television in order to receive wireless signals from the PC. These types of add-on receivers are adapters vary considerably depending on the protocol you use, and there is no one device that supports all wireless streaming protocols.

Wireless USB

If you're looking for a relatively easy-to-use method for connecting your PC and TV wirelessly, then a wireless USB PC-to-TV transmitter may be your solution. The primary advantage of these transmitters is that they work with virtually any type of computer and television. As long as your desktop or laptop computer has a free USB port, and your television has RCA inputs for audio and video, you can connect the device and stream virtually any type of content from the PC to the television. Another advantage of wireless USB transmitters is that installation and setup is relatively straightforward and takes only minutes. One of the drawbacks with the technology, though, is its limited range. Wireless USB provides a reasonably fast transfer rate of about 480Mbps -- as long as the transmitter and receiver are within 10 feet of each other. As you move the PC away from the TV, the bandwidth speed drops considerably. Wireless USB has a maximum range of about 32 feet. At this range, the protocol offers transfer speeds of about only 110Mbps per second. Nevertheless, wireless USB is fast enough to stream all types of video including that encoded in HD format. Companies that produce wireless USB PC to TV transmitters include RF-Link, Veebeam and Diamond Multimedia (links in Resources).

Intel WiDi

Many newer model laptops powered by Intel processors include special Wireless Display, or WiDi, chipsets that enable direct video streaming to compatible televisions and receiver adapters. Consequently, if you have a 2010 or later Intel-based laptop, you may not have to connect anything at all to the notebook in order to stream video. You can easily verify if your Intel-based laptop has the WiDi feature supports by typing "widi" into the Windows search box and pressing "Enter." If the Intel WiDi application shortcut appears in the search results list, then your laptop supports the feature. To use Intel WiDi, you'll need a television with the Intel Wireless Display logo or a WiDi receiver adapter. Manufacturers that currently produce WiDi receiver adapters include Belkin, D-Link and Netgear (links in Resources). One drawback with early-model laptops equipped with the technology, though, is its limited bandwidth speed. With a maximum transfer rate of about 9Mbps second, first-generation WiDI only supports the streaming of DVD-quality and 720p HD videos. If your Intel Centrino-based laptop has an 802.11n wireless adapter, its WiDi chipset is capable of streaming videos to a TV in full 1080p HD resolution.

Wireless HDI

Wireless HDI, or WHDI, is another wireless protocol used to stream video from a laptop to a television using adapters you connect to both devices. Unlike Wireless USB or WiDi, though, WHDI is also compatible with many other devices such as mobile phones, set-top boxes and some Blu-ray players. Wireless HDI uses the unlicensed 5 GHz radio band to transmit graphics and videos from a computer to a television at bandwidth speeds that easily handle 1080p high-definition video. WHDI also offers much greater range than other wireless protocols used to connect computers and televisions. Using a WHDI receiver and transmitter, you can stream video from a laptop to the television up to 100 feet away without signal amplification or line-of-sight placement. Many users and manufacturers also refer to WHDI as Wireless HDMI, as you can use an HDMI ports on a laptop or other player device to stream video wirelessly to a television. However, some manufacturers do produce USB versions of WHDI transmitters. Major companies that produce WHDI devices include Asus, Belkin, Galaxy and HP (links in Resources).

Wireless HD

Transmitting over the 60 GHz band, Wireless HD is currently the fastest type of technology available for streaming videos from a computer to a TV wirelessly. With transfer rates ranging between 10 and 28 Gbps, Wireless HD easily handles any type of media streaming from a computer to the television. While other wireless protocols are fast enough to stream high-definition video, the speed of Wireless HD makes it a viable option for playing and streaming fast-paced 3-D games on your television as well. Many high-end LCD and LED already offer built-in Wireless HD support, and you can add the technology to your PC with an add-on kit. If your TV supports Wireless HD, you can stream video from your PC by adding an adapter from companies such as Actiontec, IOGear and Vizio. Some wireless HD adapters require a dedicated HDMI port on the computer, while others offer VGA or USB connectors on the transmitters. Wireless HD devices have an effective range of about 33 feet. However, some Wireless HD transmitters include signal amplifiers that boost the range of the protocol to approximately 150 feet.

Microsoft opens tech lab at Sastra University


HANJAVUR: Sastra University has inked a deal with the Bangalore-based global support centre of Microsoft India to provide students with hands-on experience on technical services. The partnership will enable students of the deemed university to enhance their career potential by making using of tools and facilities offered at the varsity by the Global Technical Support Center (GTSC) of the Indian subsidiary of the US software giant.

The technical lab established at Sastra was launched on Wednesday by Thomas Payyapilli, general manager of and GTSC. This lab is designed to provide students with a complete experience of working in a technical services environment on campus. A typical GTSC lab simulates a data centre and computing environment where trainees can learn about handling critical technical issues.

Microsoft India GTSC will collaborate with the institution to facilitate access to technology, training and curriculum support at the lab. "Our engagement with Sastra University reflects the potential that we see from students from the institute. Our engagement will enable students to realize the potential for a career in technical services, by providing training modules and the tools necessary to help students to gain experiences, learn and grow," said Thomas.

Chandrasekhar Gopalan, director of developer support at Microsoft India, participated in the inaugural function along with officials of the varsity.

ISRO successfully performs first trajectory correction on Mars Orbiter


The first Trajectory Correction Manoeuvre of India’s maiden mission to Mars was today carried out successfully by ISRO scientists on the spacecraft, which is presently travelling some 2.9 million km away from Earth.
“The first Trajectory Correction Manoeuvre (TCM) of Spacecraft was carried out successfully at 06:30 IST by firing the 22 Newton Thrusters for a duration of 40.5 seconds.
The spacecraft is travelling at a distance of about 29 lakh (2.9 million) km away from Earth,” ISRO said in a statement.
The TCMs fine-tune the trajectory of the spacecraft to keep it travelling in the intended track towards the red planet.
Ever since the successful Trans-Mars Injection on December 1, MOM navigators were spending days ranging and measuring the spacecraft’s velocity and precisely determined its flight path to come up with the required correction in the path, ISRO said in its official Facebook page.
“Based on this, the firing duration and delta-v has been calculated which will correct the deviations before they have a chance to grow large. During the Trajectory Correction Manoeuvre, accelerometers on board MOM, gives the information when the desired delta-v is achieved,” it said.
Earlier, the spacecraft was rotated from its nominal orientation to the orientation required for the first TCM.
Wednesday’s correction was carried out by the computer on board the spacecraft, since the amount of time required for the signal to go and return was about 20 seconds, as MOM was already travelling about some 2.9 million km away, ISRO said.
“MOM team is gaining hands-on experience in handling the communication delay as it keeps increasing gradually,” it said.
Four TCMs are planned to fine tune the trajectory of the spacecraft so as to keep it in the precise intended track.
ISRO had earlier said MOM was not taking the shortest route to the Red Planet, since accelerating and later decelerating to match the planet’s speed would require an extremely large amount of fuel in that option.
The propulsion system of MOM, which is to travel a total distance of about 680 million km, will be using monomethyl hydrazine as fuel and dinitrogen tetroxide as oxidizer during all the four TCMs.
The Mars Orbiter had earlier crossed a major milestone in the country’s space history by venturing out of Earth’s sphere of influence for the first time in an attempt to reach the red planet’s orbit.
ISRO performed the trans-Mars injection, a “crucial event” intended for hurling its Mars Orbiter spacecraft into the planned orbit around the Sun in the early hours of December 1, marking the first step towards the 300 day voyage to reach the orbit of the red planet after crossing roughly 680 million kilometre.
The national space agency’s PSLV C 25 successfully injected the 1,350-kg Mars craft into the orbit around the earth some 44 minutes after the launch at 2.38 PM from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota on November 5, marking the successful completion of the first stage of the Rs 450-crore mission.
