Infosys become first Indian IT company to generate own power

BANGALORE: In 2006, soaring hotel costs and traffic snarls led Infosys to build Le Terrace, a four-star hotel with 500 rooms for its employees and overseas clients in its campus in Bangalore's Electronics City.

Eight years on, the software industry posterchild is about to embark on generating its own power, in the process saving costs, getting clean reliable power for its operations and fulfilling its broader obligations to society.

Infosys has proposed a 50 mw solar park in Karnataka, becoming the first software company in India to think of generating its own power that will meet a bulk of the electricity needs of its offices in Bangalore, Mysore and Mangalore.

Karnataka's energy minister DK Shivakumar told ET on Monday that Infosys had held one round of talks with the state government in which it had expressed keenness to build the solar power facility.

"The company will buy land on its own," he said. Infosys confirmed the intent and said it will submit a formal proposal to the government once they finalise the land.

"We hope to commission the park in about a year," said Infosys Executive Vice President Ramadas Kamath told ET. Asked why Infosys is entering captive generation, he said that his company wanted to be self-sufficient in energy.

"We want to promote use of clean energy and reduce carbon emission. Solar is the best option. Several parts of Karnataka have good solar intensity. We now have solar technologies wherein you recover your investment in eight years. It has less of maintenance hassle, and easy to build," said Kamath, who heads facilities, administration, security and sustainability at Infosys.

Kamath said the idea to build a solar park had been mooted a year ago by Infosys' head of Green Initiative Rohan Parekh, and had won the support of the company's board of directors. "Narayana Murthy and the Board have been very keen that we do this," Kamath said.

The company has already started looking for some 300 acres of land in regions of Karnataka where solar intensity is high.

The company expects project cost, including land, to be about Rs 360-380 crore, small change for a company that is sitting on a cash pile of Rs 30,000 crore. Infosys estimates that it would require about five acres of land to generate one megawatt of solar power and excluding land costs, each MW of capacity will require its shell out around Rs 6.5 crore.

All the Infosys offices in Karnataka, which between them have around 65,000 seats, consume about 95 million units a year. The pro- posed 50 MW will generate about 84 million units, nearly 90% of Infosys present energy needs.

1 MW capacity equals 1000 kilowatts or 1.67 million units of energy a year and is enough to light up anywhere between 300 and 350 homes in cities such as Delhi, Mumbai or Bangalore.

"We will buy the balance from the grid," Kamath said, adding that the company would consider scaling up its generation capacity based on its experience with the 50 MW initially planned. Grid power presently costs the company, which has managed to halve its per capita consumption of power between 2007 and 2013, about Rs 5.65 per unit, while its own solar power would cost about Rs 3 per unit after factoring in depreciation.

Barring a few states, grid power is unreliable in most parts of India, forcing companies to also have diesel-operated generators for back-up power and raising their overall power costs.

Companies such as Infosys, which carry out mission-critical operations for mostly overseas clients, need uninterrupted power and its solar experiment, if successful, could lead to other firms to think along similar lines.

Compulsory Tamil puts students in fix

Chennai: Despite taking a pledge to compulsorily teach Tamil as main language in 2006, several private schools in Tamil Nadu continued to teach other languages keeping the students in the dark.
Officials in the directorate of matriculation schools say  they have already informed the schools and even got the declaration form signed by school authorities that they would comply with the norms.
The Tamil Nadu Tamil learning Act (2006) made Tamil a compulsory language to be taught in schools starting from 2006-07 academic year. And students who joined class 1 in 2006 academic year had to take up Tamil as a mandatory subject. Schools, which failed to follow the norm, have put the students at risk now. On condition of anonymity, a senior school education department official told DC that it was a gross violation by schools, which have not taught Tamil as main language. “The government had informed them and asked them to send the declaration form. We have copies of several schools who have signed the forms,” said the official.
Speaking to DC, S. Arumainathan, state president, Tamil Nadu students parents welfare association, said, “The private schools have approached the high court only to save themselves from parents.
The schools cannot claim to be ignorant of the Act. They have given in writing that they would oblige the norm laid by the government. It is now the responsibility of schools to answer the parents.”
He added that these schools are worried about answering the parents as the students who studied other languages would not be allowed to take class 10 exams in the next academic year, 2015-16.
Sukumar Jaisingh, member of the Association of Matriculation Schools and Managements in TN and Pudhucherry, the association which moved the court against teaching Tamil as compulsory language,  said, "We are not against teaching Tamil. But considering the inconvenience of students we are forced to teach the language, which they are comfortable with. Moeover, we did not receive any letter from the school education department in 2006 making  Tamil a compulsory language."

What is Article 370?

Article 370 of the Indian Constitution is a 'temporary provision' which grants special autonomous status to Jammu and Kashmir. Under Part XXI of the Constitution of India, which deals with "Temporary, Transitional and Special provisions", the state of Jammu and Kashmir has been accorded special status under Article 370.
All the provisions of the Constitution which are applicable to other states are not applicable to J&K. For example, till 1965, J&K had a Sadr-e-Riyasat for governor and Prime Minister in place of chief minister.
The provision was drafted in 1947 by Sheikh Abdullah, who had by then been appointed Prime Minister of Jammu and Kashmir by Maharaja Hari Singh and Jawahar Lal Nehru. Sheikh Abdullah had argued that Article 370 should not be placed under temporary provisions of the Constitution. He wanted 'iron clad autonomy' for the state, which Centre didn't comply with.
According to this Article, except for defence, foreign affairs, finance and communications, the Parliament needs the state government's concurrence for applying all other laws. Thus the state's residents live under a separate set of laws, including those related to citizenship, ownership of property, and fundamental rights, as compared to other Indians. As a result of this provision, Indian citizens from other states can not purchase land or property in Jammu & Kashmir.
Under Article 370, the Centre has no power to declare financial emergency under Article 360 in the state. It can declare emergency in the state only in case of war or external aggression. The Union government can therefore not declare emergency on grounds of internal disturbance or imminent danger unless it is made at the request or with the concurrence of the state government.
By far, the most debated and discussed article in the entire Constitution, Modi's suggestion on a debate on the abrogation of Article 370, has once again brought this provision in the limelight.

Wipro offers $2.8 million grant for a STEM Fellowship Program

BANGALORE: Wipro and Michigan State University (MSU) have launched the Wipro STEM Fellowship Program that would focus on building leadership in these disciplines in urban schools.

This multi-year programme will be funded by a $2.8 million grant from Wipro, and will involve over a hundred school teachers, with the aim of nurturing excellence in science and mathematics, starting with the public school systems of Chicago.

The Wipro STEM Fellowship Program will focus on building leadership in these disciplines in urban schools by leveraging on research validated expertise of the College of Education at the MSU in designing transformative and innovative instructional experiences. For the Chicago public schools system, this program and its fellow teachers will be an integrated part of its effort towards STEM capacity development in the districts.

Wipro's initiative is aligned with the US national goal to significantly improve the quality of education in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). "Wipro is committed to being an involved participant in its communities. This initiative seeks to develop and inspire young people to contribute to excellence in STEM education," said T.K Kurien, CEO of Wipro.

The program, to be entirely funded by Wipro, will identify teachers committed to teaching in urban schools after a rigorous selection process. Participants will be elementary or secondary school educators.

Successful participants will earn a Graduate Certificate in STEM Teaching and Leadership recognizing their commitment and expertise in STEM fields in urban education. All program participants will also become part of the STEM Urban Learning & Leadership Community. This community seeks to create a cohort culture that builds both individual and collective capacity to give an impetus for STEM learning outcomes among urban students. The program leverages directly on the significant Urban Education initiatives of the College of Education, MSU, and its award winning Master of Arts Program in Education Technology.

The College of Education, MSU is one of the leading schools of education in the US, working across multiple states.

"There is a critical shortage of excellent math and science teachers nationwide and even more so in urban school districts," said project co-leader Sonya Gunnings-Moton, assistant dean in the College of Education, Michigan State University. "We need leaders among teachers who can build not only their own capacity to improve learning, but also the capacity of their colleagues."

Aarti Dhupelia, chief officer of College and Career Success at Chicago Public Schools said, "The cornerstone of providing a high quality STEM education for our students is ensuring we have exceptional math and science teachers leading the way. We are so grateful for this partnership with Wipro and Michigan State University that will have a transformational impact in our classrooms and communities."

"This program is designed to develop each of these teachers into catalysts of change in disadvantaged communities of urban areas. This initiative also dovetails with our vision of making a deep and impactful contribution towards achieving high quality education," said Anurag Behar, chief sustainability officer, Wipro.

This initiative with MSU is the second such program that Wipro has kicked off in the past 16 months in the US. In 2012, Wipro and the University of Massachusetts, Boston (UMass Boston) jointly launched a fellowship program across 10 districts of Boston and Newark area in STEM Education, with the aim of fostering excellence.

Since the beginning of the last decade, Wipro has unveiled a raft of initiatives targeted at resolving issues dogging India's education system. Wipro's Applying Thought in Schools aims to improve the quality of school education. Mission10x is an initiative, wherein the company works with college teachers to enhance employability skills of engineering graduates in India.

Wipro employs more than 10,000 professionals across 48 states in the US. Wipro has a vigorous recruitment program and hires from colleges and universities across the US.

HRD, Prasar Bharati to start 50 education channels by May next year

NEW DELHI: Students across the country will be able to hear lectures and interact with academicians on TV as the Human Resource Development (HRD) ministry and public broadcaster Prasar Bharati are planning to start 50 educational channels by May 1 next year.

HRD officials said under this project, which to their knowledge had no parallel across the world, the number of channels would be increased from 50 to 1,000 and has the potential to be viewed on 167 million TV sets and benefiting a population of more than 67 per cent in the country.

As per an agreement signed by Prasar Bharati CEO Jawhar Sircar and HRD secretary Ashok Thakur on Thursday, while the public broadcaster will provide expertise in carrying the channels on a DTH platform, the ministry would focus on providing content of the programmes.

The channels will run structured programmes the content of which will originate from institutions like IITs, IGNOU, State Open Universities, Central Universities, NITs. Each channel shall deliver mostly live telecasts, 9 hours a day, which will be repeated in the next 15 hours, HRD officials said.

The channels will carry curriculum based content in almost all subjects being taught in universities and colleges. The would also be available on the internet. The channels will carry a Doordarshan logo and viewers will have to buy a Set Top Box to view them, officials said.

Officials said that the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs had in 2009 approved 'National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology' or (NME-ICT) under which the launch of 1000 educational channels had been envisaged.

Prasar Bharati CEO Sircar told reporters that the broadcaster was open to partner ministries, departments and organisations for programmes which come under the domain of public service broadcasting. He said Prasar Bharati was not eyeing profits by launching these channels but hoped that the DTH platform would help increase its reach.

Infosys may hire up to 16,000 campus recruits next year

Infosys, India's second-largest information technology services provider that is attempting to return to stronger growth by winning large outsourcing contracts, expects to hire as many as 16,000 college graduates next fiscal year.
Infosys is in the process of making these offers, executive chairman Narayana Murthy told students at the Vivekanand Education Society in Mumbai, where he was delivering a lecture on Wednesday.
Murthy did not give details about the company's overall recruitment target for the next fiscal, which would include experienced hires and staff for the company's back-office unit.
In October, Infosys tightened its guidance for the year ending March 2014 raising hopes that the company is on the mend. Founder Murthy returned in June after Infosys, once the sector bellwether, lost ground to competitors over some two years marked by a series of disappointing results and a deferment of hiring campus recruits to whom it had made job offers.
Helped by a broad pickup in demand for IT outsourcing in its biggest markets the United States and Europe, India's $108 billion (Rs 6.6 lakh crore) software services sector is expected to accelerate its growth in the year ahead.
Nasscom, the industry lobby, may say the sector will boost exports by 15 per cent for the next fiscal year, brokerage Prabhudas Lilladhar said in a recent report. That compares with 12-14 per cent for the year that ends March.

IIM Calcutta launches a new activity centre

IIM Calcutta is renowned for introducing new initiatives and they took it a step further with the launch of yet another activity centre, IIM Calcutta Case Research Centre (IIMCCRC).

Over the last few years IIMC has developed a strong team of approximately 25 faculty members who have been exposed to case teaching, writing, and research through recruitment of young faculty members from case teaching oriented institutions. IIMCCRC will offer these faculty members and others necessary platform and infrastructure to build a repository of cases on Indian companies.
The activities of the centre will include case development, workshops on case writing, teaching and research, and eventually building case repository. Such repository of cases and teaching notes can be used by faculty members of IIMC, other Indian business schools/universities and even universities from abroad.
The Centre will follow a rigorous review process in order to ensure that the cases developed with the support of IIMCCRC are of the highest standard. The IIMCCRC has set a target of developing 10 teaching cases in the very first year of its operation.
The launch of the centre was held in organising the maiden case research workshop on case writing, teaching and research in the new academic block of the campus on June 14-15, 2012. The workshop was two-day long and comprised three eminent speakers. Day 1 had two workshops, Managing Case Writing conducted by Jeroen van den Berg, center manager of the Center for Business Case Studies, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, followed by Case Selection and Case Writing by Anjali Raina, executive director, Harvard Business School India Research Center.

MBA market booming in India

New research released on TopMBA.com shows that the Indian MBA market is booming as employers in India have increased their hiring of MBA graduates over the past year, and expects to continue hiring at a higher rate in 2013

The 2012 QS TopMBA.com Jobs and Salary Trends Report, which received responses from 3,315 MBA employers around the world this year, reveals MBA hiring in India increased by 16% during 2011/12 and is set to increase at an even more astonishing rate of 29% in 2013.

In the Asia-Pacific region, average compensation levels are reported to be almost US$79,000 per annum, a 20% increase in the past year. However, India’s salary levels remain below the Asian-Pacific average at $49,500 per annum. The report has excluded respondents who reported offering salaries below US$30,000 per annum as their intention is to seek MBAs without work experience as an alternative to a Bachelor’s degree.

Globally, demand in consulting and finance, traditionally two of the most popular industries for MBA hiring, both saw a 16% growth in demand in 2012 but the forecast for next year sees this drop to 9% and 3% growth respectively.

Edward Hyun, VP, Strategic Relationship Management for American Express Global Network Services Asia, says, “MBAs bring the maturity, business and cultural awareness as well as the leadership skills to take our company forward. Even during difficult economic conditions we remain committed to our MBA hiring programme, not just to Asia but around the world.”

Nunzio Quacquarelli, director of the QS World MBA Tour and editor of TopMBA.com, says, “For the last few years, India has been an extremely hot MBA market and it’s showing no signs of slowing down. The country has now even taken over the US in terms of volume of reported MBA jobs for fresh graduates in 2012.”

He continues, “While multinationals in India still have a strong preference for recruiting from international business schools, the majority of Indian employers are actively looking to recruit from local business schools like the IIMs and Indian School of Business (ISB), among others.”

Top business schools such as Wharton, Columbia, Imperial, Toronto-Rotman, NUS, Sydney Business School and many more are taking advantage of the MBA hiring boom in India and will be in India between November 26 _ December 5 for the QS World MBA Tour to recruit some of the country’s future business leaders to their campuses abroad.

Kochi Co-operative Medical College now under government

Kochi/ Thiruvananthapuram: The Cabinet on Wednesday decided to take over the Co-operative Medical College, Kochi, and constituted a high-level committee to finalize the service and salary conditions of the employees.
At the Cabinet briefing, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said the medical college would function under the Directorate of Medical Education.
A high level committee comprising secretaries of health, personnel and administrative reforms, finance and co-operation departments and the Director of Medical Education has been constituted to examine matters relating to the service and salary of the staff.
The Chief Minister said the Government had received a report on the assets and liabilities of the medical college.
The report was subjected to a detailed scrutiny by a committee comprising principal secretaries of health and family welfare and finance, the District Collector of Ernakulam and Dr Junaid Rahaman, Medical Director of CMC.
On being asked about Pariyaram Medical College, the Chief Minister said the Government was yet to receive a final assessment report on its takeover.
While students and teachers of the college were jubilant over the takeover, several non-teaching staff on contract wages were apprehensive of their future.
Welcoming the decision, CMC Medical Director Dr Junaid Rehman said the public would get free treatment at the hospital after its takeover.
“The whole 100 MBBS seats too will become merit seats. The college will get better faculty. All Central Government schemes can be introduced and more funds can be expected. The NRHM and National Urban Health Mission schemes too can be implemented now. There will not be any restrictions on using MP/MLA funds,” he said.
Justice V.R.Krishna Iyer, Prof M.K.Sanu and former district collector K.R.Viswambharan, who were for a Government takeover, welcomed the decision.
They said that now the government will have to speed up the process of setting up a cancer centre on the new medical college campus.
The CMC was set up in 2000 February under the Co-operative Academy for Professional Medical College (CAPE). Initially spread in three rented campuses at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium Indira Gandhi Co-operative Hospital and General Hospital, it moved to its own Kalamassery campus in 2004 August.
